The method involves coupling a light (3) into a photoconductive disk (1) over edge surfaces the disk such that the light is propagated between opposing surfaces of the disk due to total reflection. Total reflectance at a contact position is interrupted with contact of one of the opposing surfaces by an animal (4). The light scattered due to the interrupted reflectance at the position or in the animal is detected by a camera (6). A dye agent and a contrast agent are applied to the animal such that an inner body region or internal organ of the animal is observed with increased/reduced contrast. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting an animal within an observation arena.
