The method involves adjusting a driving speed by a driver assistance system (10) on releasing an accelerator pedal, which increases in a defined manner with respect to a measured vehicle speed at the time of releasing the accelerator pedal. The vehicle speed is automatically controlled while downhill driving of the vehicle. The increase in the vehicle speed is adjusted to the current vehicle speed, when the vehicle speed decreases. The defined increase in the vehicle speed is performed based on the extent of the measured vehicle speed at the time of releasing the accelerator pedal. An independent claim is included for a driver assistance system for a vehicle, particularly for automatically controlling the vehicle speed, with a control unit.
