The method involves impinging the transmitter inductance with a periodic signal. The receiving inductance has two partial windings and the voltage induced in the partial windings is detected and evaluated. The direction of the change of the phase difference of the two induced voltages is determined, where the change of the phase difference is caused by the movement of the vehicle. The phase difference is a biunique, particularly strictly monotonic function of the relative position of the receiver inductance based on the position of the transmitter inductance. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for automatic parking of a vehicle into a position of maximum coupling between a receiver inductance and a transmitter inductance; and (2) a system for executing a method for automatic parking of a vehicle.
