The device (10) has a selector lever (12) for adjusting drive position of a transmission along a switching lane (16) and producing gear change along the lane. The position is adjusted in an operating mode through the movement of the lever when driving speed is smaller than or equal to a predetermined threshold level, where the transmission is automatically switched from the mode to another operating mode when the speed exceeds the threshold level. Sequential switching of gears is manually caused upwardly and downwardly in the latter mode through the movement of the lever along the lane.
