The network (100) has main participants (201, 202) and secondary participants (401, 402) connected with each other in rings (101, 102). The secondary participants receive data packets (501, 502) at an input and transmit the data packets to an output. The main participants receive the data packet generated from one of the main participants at the input and transmit the data packets to the output. The secondary participants receive the data packets from the other main participants in a transmission cycle and process the data packets according to a fail-safe mode.
