The device (10) has a sensor (12,22) that is provided for detecting a position of an operating unit (14) relative to a touch-sensitive surface (26) of an operating device. A symbol (18) is displayed on a display (20) in dependence on the position of the operating unit. The sensor (22) detects the coordinate of the operating unit in one spatial direction (X,Y) and the sensor (12) detects coordinate of the operating unit in other spatial direction (Z). An evaluation device (32) is provided for determining the position of the operating unit based on the coordinates. An independent claim is included for method for actuating functional units of motor car.
