The filter element (1) has a multi-layer structure of a filter medium (3), which comprises filter folds (5,7) in pleated form with different fold heights. The filter element has a flow direction for cleaning fluid from a dirty side (S) to the clean side (R). All the filter folds, which are adjacent to the clean side, terminate along an imaginary circular cylinder which passes through the filter medium coaxially to its longitudinal axis.
