The construction machine (1) has a machine frame (2) supported by a driving unit (3). A working unit, particularly milling roller (6) is mounted on the machine frame for underlying ground surface processing, which engages into the underlying ground (U) in the working mode. An auxiliary drive unit (10) is provided, which is designed such that it makes the required drive power available for an adjustment of the construction machine from the working mode into the transportation operating mode alternatively for a main drive unit (4). An independent claim is included for a method for operating a construction machine for underlying ground surface processing.
