The method involves providing an image of a surrounding area (4) by a camera (5). A target object (3) is detected by a relative position of the target object with respect to a motor vehicle (1) as the first position results from an image by an image processing unit (17). The relative position of the target object is determined as second position result based on the sensor data of sensors (6,7,8,9). An independent claim is included for a driver assistance device with a camera.
