Joining rotationally symmetrical workpieces (2a, 2b) along its longitudinal axis, preferably joining glass tubes, comprises (a) positioning the front side of a to-be-joined workpiece end in a measuring device, (b) measuring the geometry and/or orientation of the workpiece ends, (c) determining an axial joining position and/or rotational position of the workpieces mutually depending on the measured geometry and/or orientation, (d) positioning the to-be-joined workpieces in the determined axial joining position and/or the determined rotational position, and (e) joining the workpieces. Joining rotationally symmetrical workpieces (2a, 2b) along its longitudinal axis, preferably joining glass tubes, comprises (a) positioning the front side of a to-be-joined workpiece end in a measuring device, (b) measuring the geometry and/or orientation of the workpiece ends, (c) determining an axial joining position and/or rotational position of the workpieces mutually depending on the measured geometry and/or orientations to achieve a coaxial alignment and/or a predetermined axial distance between the workpiece ends, (d) positioning the to-be-joined workpieces in the determined axial joining position and/or the determined rotational position, and (e) joining the workpieces. An independent claim is also included for a device for joining rotationally symmetrical workpieces along its longitudinal axis, preferably for joining glass tubes comprising a holding device (3) for receiving and positioning the workpieces, and for carrying out the above mentioned method, a measuring device (7) for measuring the geometry and/or orientation of the workpiece ends and a device for evaluating the measured geometries and/or orientations, where the evaluation device for achieving a coaxial alignment and/or a predetermined axial distance of the workpiece ends determines the axial joining position and/or rotational position of the workpiece ends depending on the measured geometries and/or orientations.
