The parasol (1) comprises a support and a surface element, which is held by the support and spans a space to provide shadows. A photovoltaic element (4) is mounted on, at or in the surface element. The parasol is designed such that it is opened and closed, particularly is foldable and unfoldable. The surface element comprises a flexible or collapsible or foldable covering (3). The parasol comprises current lines or data lines (7), which are connected with the photovoltaic element or an electrical or data connection. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a method for operating a parasol; and (2) a retrofit kit for a parasol, particularly for the formation of a parasol.
