The self-propelled suction device (1) has a sensor for detecting the characteristics of an environment of the suction device, where the sensor is arranged to detect the liquid located on the surface to be cleaned. The sensor is formed as an optical sensor, a camera (8) and an infrared reflection sensor (9), where the camera serves additionally for the navigation of the suction device. The sensor is also formed as resistive sensor and has a contact pair (10). A control unit (6) is provided for evaluating the sensor. An independent claim is included for a method for operating a self-propelled suction device.
