The gripper (9) has a housing with an air inlet and an air outlet, and multiple suction openings (13) formed in a suction surface (11) for sucking a workpiece. The suction surface comprises two electrodes (15, 17). The electrodes are connected with a voltage measuring unit. The suction surface is made of an electrically insulative material. The suction surface is partially coated with a conductive material for generating the electrodes. The electrodes are electrically insulated from each other by the suction surface. An independent claim is also included for a control device for controlling a suction gripper.
