The method involves clamping a working spindle (3) of a processing machine in a clamping device (2). An alternating signal of variable frequency is inductively coupled in a tool (1) by an inductance (4). The change of the emission of electromagnetic waves is detected by the tool depending on the frequency. The frequency dependent dimension of the tool and the position data of the tool with respect to the clamping device are determined based on the change of the emission of electromagnetic waves.
