The apparatus (1) has a filter unit (9) for filtering exhaust gases that enter at a filter entry surface (11) in filter unit, flow through filter unit and emerge at a filter exit surface (13) of filter unit. A distribution passage (15) distributes to-be-filtered gases along filter inlet surface, and a collecting channel (17) collects filter-filtered exhaust gases that exit at exit surface. The cross section of collecting channel increases in flow direction of exhaust gases and/or cross section of distribution channel decreases in flow direction of exhaust gases.
