The method involves assigning multiple gears (G2,G4) with identical switching elements (A,B,C,D,E) and performing gear changes in the form of overlapping circuits in a normal mode. The speed setting is carried out for keeping the engine speed of the actual gear and for adjusting the engine speed theoretically of the next target gear. The common switching element is closed after reaching the engine speed assigned to the final target gear.
