The calender (10) has a thermo roll (12) and counter roll (14) that is replaceable. A protective curtain (20) in a roll nip (N) is configured to shield the change and maintain the counter roll against the heat emitted by the thermo roll. A jacket is provided with a heating medium that is acted upon electrically by channels and heating elements. The roll nip configured for calendering through the running paper or board web. The curtain is provided with a cooling medium acted upon by channels. An independent claim is included for a method for changing/servicing unheated intermediate roll in calender.
