The transmitter comprises a current input and two separate current outputs (OUT1, OUT2) where supply current is supplied by the current input for a transmitter, and values of process variables are transferred as current signals moving in opposite directions. Current loop current output circuits are connected to a reference potential (GND), which is lowered relative to the input potential at the current input. Two voltage regulators (SR1, SR2) are connected to input potential and reference potential. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for transmitting a process variable from a transmitter to a control unit (2) a method for monitoring a transmitter.
