The battery module (100) has a cell stack with a rechargeable electrochemical cell. The housing (101,201) is provided surrounding the cell stack. The contact elements (105a,105b) are arranged within the housing for making electrical contact with the battery module. The portion of the housing is formed as a grid, and the contact elements of the connector are arranged to be accessible behind the grid. The connectors (301,302) are connected to the contact elements. An independent claim is included for an energy storage system.
