The method involves detecting an assignment error between a fuel spray (116) and a spark gap (21) in a cylinder (11) of an internal combustion engine, and selecting change parameter from the group consisting of a needle stroke of an outwardly opening annular gap valve (115) of the cylinder, a fuel pressure to the cylinder, a fuel injection timing, and a time interval between two fuel injections. The time interval between two fuel injections is approximated if the fuel is sprayed to large distance. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a computer program for correcting assignment error between fuel spray and spark gap; (2) a data carrier; and (3) a control device.
