The method involves dividing lamps (40) of index groups into two selected index subgroups, where the index groups are offset in two operation modes, where one of the operation modes is different from the other operation mode. Position codes of the lamps among the selected lamps are input in an input device (12), which is provided in one of the operating modes. The position codes that are not entered and entered by a user at the selected lamps from the index groups are deleted in the operation modes, respectively. Identical codes of the lamps provided in the selected lamps are indicated. An independent claim is also included for a lighting system.
