The system has series battery cells e.g. nickel metal hydride battery cells, connected with terminals of a battery over contactors, where the system determines temperature of one of the contactors to determine a threshold value by consideration of the temperature. The temperature is computed using a resistance value of the contactors. An input receives temperature measurement signals and determines the temperature based on the temperature measurement signals. Limit temperature is determined depending on battery cell temperature. A temperature sensor (100) is integrated in the contactors.
