The machine has a press part (5) i.e. pressure joist, comprising a controllable press element, which support a grinding unit (4) e.g. grinding roller, relative to a workpiece (W). A workpiece detection unit (10) detects workpiece contour or workpiece profile. The workpiece detection unit comprises an acoustic sensor i.e. ultrasonic sensor. A control unit (20) calculates workpiece thickness based on a detection result of the acoustic sensor. A circulating conveying belt (6) is provided as a workpiece support for feeding a workpiece to the workpiece detection unit and the press part.
