The device (1) has upper lifting units (8) provided with a clamping device for clamping elastic label cases (3) at a cup bottom adjacent to a lateral wall section. Spreading units (6), lower lifting units and the upper lifting units lower into a labeling end position, where cups (2) and the label cases are arranged outside the spreading units in the end position such that the lower and upper lifting units are lifted from a starting position to the end position and provided in contact with the cups and the label cases. Inner base plates are lifted relative to outer base plates. An independent claim is also included for a method for labeling cups.
