The inlet valve (5) has housing-fixed valve casing and a movable valve needle which cooperates with valve seat (15) of the valve casing, if the inlet valve is closed. A position actuator (12) is used for adjusting the aperture stroke of the valve needle, such that maximum passage area of the inlet valve is adjusted with a maximum aperture stroke of the valve needle. The adjusting passage area of inlet valve is determined with a partial stroke of the valve needle. An independent claim is included for method for operating inlet valve for pump.
