Expandable polymer particle comprises at least 50 wt.% of polymerized styrene and/or alpha -methyl styrene. The polymer particle is coated with a coating agent containing glycerol tribenzoate. Independent claims are also included for: (1) producing expandable polymer particle comprising applying the coating by spraying or tumbling; (2) producing an expandable styrene polymer, comprising mixing a blowing agent and optionally further auxiliaries and additives into a styrene polymer melt by static and/or dynamic mixer at a temperature of at least 150[deg] C, cooling the blowing agent-containing styrene polymer melt to a temperature of at least 120[deg] C, discharging through a die plate with holes whose diameter at the die exit is not 1.5 mm, and granulating the blowing agent-containing melt directly beyond the die plate under water at a pressure of 1-20 bar, and applying a coating by spraying or tumbling; and (3) a composite molded article comprising a core material and at least one cover layer, where the core material is a foam molded part or block of foam.
