The quenching device has a quenching chamber that is bounded by a flame-proof housing, and a water quench that is maintained at the bottom of the quenching chamber, where a central raw gas- and slag removing unit is arranged in the quenching chamber for supplying the raw gas (5). A discharge hopper (3) is arranged in the quenching chamber centrally under the raw gas- and slag removing unit and is immersed in the water quench with its immersion tube (2) such that the quenching chamber has an upper quenching area and a lower quenching area.
