The device has an associated optical transmission measuring unit (5) and a reflection measuring device (7), by which a determination of respective transmission- or reflection coefficients of a particle flow (9) with a particle size distribution is carried out in a pulverized fuel duct (3) in a respective measuring volume (4). A calculating unit is provided for the calculation of mean free length of the path and effective cross section of a particle density distribution. An independent claim is included for a method for determining a coal mass flow through pulverized fuel duct in a combustion chamber of a pulverized coal burner.
