The method involves storing sequence-based current rising times for a stepping motor over a specific period before and after reaching a mechanical stop unit as a reference position. A control sequence for a sector is determined from determined values of a change in the sequence-based current rising times by a preliminary examination process, before the blockage at the mechanical stop unit. The determined control sequence of the stepping motor is positioned immediately before the mechanical stop unit. The determined control sequence is allocated to the reference position. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling a stepping motor.
