The appliance (1) has treatment chamber (3) that is formed for receiving to-be-treated material (4). An illumination device (5) is provided to illuminate light (8) in a portion of the treatment chamber. A light sensor (10) is arranged to receive reflected light (14,15) on inner side of the treatment chamber from the illumination device. The reflection of the light is dependent on the amount of light injected into the treatment room. An evaluation device (17) is provided to derive the measure of degree of loading of the treatment chamber from the received light.
