The method involves actuating a permanent energized synchronous machine (28) in accordance with field-oriented controls (30). The synchronous machine is supplied with electrical power using a battery over a direct voltage intermediate circuit in a normal operation. The battery is disconnected from the intermediate circuit in an erroneous operation (31). The synchronous machine is continuously operated by the electrical power saved in the intermediate circuit in accordance with the field-oriented controls in the erroneous operation. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for controlling a traction propulsion system, comprising a permanent energized synchronous machine (2) a motor car comprising a traction propulsion system.
