The device (1) has a washing drum (4) receiving items of laundry (6). An end face is provided with a circular drum base (8). A detecting device is adapted for detecting a load state of the washing drum. The detecting device determines a total volume of the washing drum that is filled with laundry. A three dimensional sensor (18) determine items of laundry in the laundry drum. A door (9) is provided in a housing (2). A tub (3) is resiliently supported against the housing through swing systems (12, 13). The sensor is arranged on the door. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a laundry handling device.
