The method involves determining drive torque and current of a drive device (26) based on target rotational speed of compressor (18). The voltage is generated for driving the drive device based on target current. The actual current of drive device and actual rotational speed of compressor are recorded. The actual rotational speed of compressor is determined based on driving torque, load torque, and resulting torque of drive device. The compressor pumping is detected based on change in resultant torque and target current of drive device, and target rotational speed of compressor. An independent claim is included for a fuel cell system.
