Partial use of heat energy from the vapors of a thermal separation of liquids comprises expanding the vapors in an aggregate (4), which is arranged between separation apparatus (1) and condenser (6). The aggregate is designed as a low-pressure expansion aggregate. The mechanical energy is generated and is further converted into electrical energy by means of a generator (5), which is connected with the expansion aggregate. An independent claim is also included for a plant for carrying out the above mentioned method, comprising (a) the thermal separation apparatus for thermal separation of liquids, (b) the low-pressure expansion aggregate with the associated generator, which is followed by the separation apparatus, (c) the capacitor, which is arranged downstream to the expansion aggregate, where the vapors, which is generated in the separation apparatus and expanded in the expansion aggregate, is condensed.
