The method involves selecting gear ratio in dependence of shifting process parameters between two different target gear shifting operations. A total release moment or total switching duration is used as switching outlet parameters. A switching sequence is chosen at a comfort-oriented switching mode that comprises a total release moment. The switching sequence is chosen with a sport-oriented switching mode that comprises a total switching duration. The total switching duration is determined in dependence of a mass inertia of a gear change of the switching sequence.
