The method involves determining a predetermined gesture of an occupant (10) of a motor vehicle by a gesture detection unit (42), where an operating condition of a display device (38) is adjusted according the determined predetermined gesture. The predeterminable gesture is detected in such way that with this gesture the occupant with spread-apart fingers (30) of a hand (26) of the occupant points to an eye (16) of the occupant.
