The data security device has a media counter (3), where the counter reading of the media counter is read independent of the smart metering system (1) and is provided to a user terminal (2). An access request of the user terminal is provided to the smart metering system with the counter reading of the media counter. The counter is read even by the smart metering system through an internal counter bus system. The two counter readings are compared, and the access permission for the user terminal is granted on compliance.
