The machine has counter rails arranged in a folding area of a cover, and a suction strip (41) supported at a suspension rail (40) in a pivotable manner. A lifting rake (7) is provided for transporting a book block in a vertical direction for gluing outer sides of the book block by a glue roller (16). The suspension rail retains the book block, clamps the book block together with the cover in the folding area and brings the book block to an end position. The joined book is conveyed by printing rollers (45a, 45b), where the cover is automatically supplied to a bondage outlet within the machine.
