The method involves detecting whether the view (16) of a user is directed on one of the functional unit (12) in the display areas (18,18') of display device (20) automatically by view tracking device (14). A determination is performed to determine whether a given blink pattern is performed by the user, when the view directed on the display areas. A control function for controlling the functional unit is activated, if the user has performed the given blink pattern. The given blink pattern is specified as double blink of the user. An independent claim is included for system for controlling functional unit of motor vehicle.
