The method involves determining a volume flow superelevation based on measurement of a volume flow by a volume flow sensor (4), and a volume flow that is previously determined relative to calibration, in a valve position of a priority switching valve (10). A resulting volume flow in a heating circuit in the valve position is calculated from the determined volume flow superelevation via a proportionality factor or a regression account. The circuit is operated in a normal operation so that the valve is operated in a position in which the volume flow exclusively flows through a heat sink (6). The priority switching valve is a three-way valve.
