The tool (2) has a workpiece carrier (3) for supporting a workpiece (6), and a tool carrier (4) fastened to a frame (8). A light distance sensor unit (14) is provided for optical detection of distance between the sensor device and the workpiece. A position sensor unit (18) detects position of the tool carrier. The distance sensor unit is designed such that a projection beam (30) of the distance sensor unit intersects a setting direction (10). An evaluation unit detects three different dot pairs and determines notional radius (20) of the workpiece by the detected dot pairs. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a machine tool.
