Acceleration of ions involves injecting gaseous mixture containing gas component (A) containing hydrogen and gas component (B) by a nozzle into a vacuum, irradiating pulsed laser light to the gaseous mixture, ionizing the gas clusters in the gaseous mixture and accelerating. The density of clusters in the gas cluster is 2x 10 8-2x 10 1 0 cm - 3. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) ion irradiation device; and (2) medical ion irradiation device.
