The illumination device (1) has a light source (2-1) whose functionality is detected using detection device (3). The light source designed as light bulb is provided with two independent operable filaments (2-1-1,2-1-2) that are connected to detection device via respective circuit (4,5). The circuit (5) is closed and the filament (2-1-2) is activated, while the detection device detects an error within the filament (2-1-1) via the circuit (4). An independent claim is included for a method for operation of the illumination device.
