The invention relates to a method and a device for the automatic characterization and monitoring of an electrical network or a power network section or an electrical system by comparing relationships between measured values. According to the invention, the comparison is carried out by evaluating a large number Z of pairs of measured variables (1). Categories of unwanted or error states are extracted from samples of those pairs of measured quantities (1) with limit violations or with unknown mutual relationships, to which the system reacts with category-specific alarms and switching activities. Point clouds (3) are formed from historical measured value pairs (2 '') during a learning mode (32) and expectation range limits (8 ') are defined, and the currently measured measured value pairs (2') of all examined are monitored during a monitoring mode (33) current measured value pairs (1 ') with the historical measured value pairs (2' ') are checked to see whether they are within the expected range limits (8'). The current criticality levels of all primary alarms can be displayed as colored dots or the like in a semi-matrix arrangement in an output device (25) of the device according to the invention.
