The method involves detecting a cooling agent dependent variable at preset period. An actual frequency distribution of measured values of measured variable is created. The filling amount of cooling agent (5) in refrigeration system (2) is evaluated based on the determined offset of the actual frequency distribution. The measured variable is obtained from the cooling agent level measured by a level sensor (7) at a cooling agent reservoir (1) or from the cooling agent temperature measured by a temperature sensor at an ejection portion of a condenser of the refrigeration system. An independent claim is included for a refrigeration system.
