The device (10) has a support element (6) for supporting a load handling device i.e. fork tines, where the support element is laterally movable with respect to a base support (8) by an electric linear motor i.e. permanent magnet-excited asynchronous linear motor (13). The support element is a support frame (5) for holding the fork tines. The support element and the base support are blocked to each other by a clamping device, where the linear motor is connected with the support element through a rail (14).
