The device (100) has a fixing device (140) for detachably fixing a free end region (130) of a dental drill in a retainer bearing (190) e.g. ball bearing. A chassis (150) accommodates the retainer bearing and the fixing device. The fixing device includes a fixing element (141) with an effective diameter, which is reciprocately transferrable from a condition into another condition. The free end region of the dental drill has no contact with the fixing element in the former condition, and is fixedly engaged with the fixing element in the latter condition.
