Structure adjustment of three-dimensional collagen-based biomaterial matrices which are prepared by freeze-drying of collagen suspensions, and are based on a statistical process model, comprises adjusting the control variables for the process of freeze-drying from predetermined structural target sizes of the collagen matrix. The variables comprise: three-dimensional structure of the pores, average pore size, ratio of the pore volume to the total volume of the matrix, presence of a barrier layer in the collagen matrix, and optionally vertical position of the barrier layer. Structure adjustment of three-dimensional collagen-based biomaterial matrices which are prepared by freeze-drying of collagen suspensions, and are based on a statistical process model, comprises adjusting the control variables for the process of freeze-drying from predetermined structural target sizes of the collagen matrix. The variables comprise: three-dimensional structure of the pores, average pore size, ratio of the pore volume to the total volume of the matrix, presence of a barrier layer in the collagen matrix, optionally vertical position of the barrier layer, and optionally the ratio of pore size on both sides of the barrier layer.
