The method according to the invention for firing and cooling of carbonate rocks takes place in a dc-regenerative lime shaft with two shafts, alternately in the form of the chamber and which are operated as a regenerative shafta. the carbonate rocks in an upper, as a preheating and combustion zone designed region of each shaft, is added and where it is preheated and calcined,example, the calcined carbonate rocks subsequently, in a lower, which is constructed as a cooling zone and a central displacement body region of each shaft, which is cooled,c. the cooled, for example, calcined carbonate rocks then assigned to each shaft via a discharge device is discharged, and whereinthat the cooling zone for cooling of the calcined carbonate rocks cooling air is supplied, the partially in the region of the discharging apparatus and in part, via the displacement body is introduced,e. the quantity of cooling air to be supplied to the chamber from 90 to 100%, by way of the displacement element and to a maximum of 10% in the region of the discharging apparatus is supplied, while the the regenerierschacht quantity of cooling air to be supplied to the extent of 90 to 100% in the region of the discharging apparatus and to a maximum of 10% is supplied via the displacement body.
