The transmission (10) has an area auxiliary transmission (21) arranged between a main shaft (13) and an output shaft (12) of the transmission. A countershaft (16) is drive connected with the output shaft or an input of the auxiliary transmission via a switchable gear wheel stage (ZA7) by bypassing the auxiliary transmission. The switchable gear wheel stage is directly connected with a same element of the auxiliary transmission as the output shaft and/or with the output shaft. An input shaft (11) is connected with the countershaft by a switchable clutch (18) e.g. wet-running lamella clutch. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a dual clutch transmission.
